We Meet is a group communication service, where users can create and manage persistent groups or communities. The group participant's are aware of each other's vicinity or location information. All the communication such as group management, vicinity information, chat is done over SMS, with a rich user experience provided by the We Meet Java client. You can also use the We Meet texting commands on practically any model and make of mobile device. The functionality of text commands is though limited when compared to the Java client.
We Meet is currently still a research pilot from Nokia Research Center Palo Alto. The purpose of this project is to understand the use cases and scenarios of group communication in a mobile environment, and the application of location and vicinity information in mobile social networks. We would like to hear your feedbacks and suggestions via email or send a chat message in the SYSTEM group from your We Meet client.
The service could be accessed via a Java client or via the text-only client. Java client provides a richer UI, user experience and functionality. The text only client supports limited feature's of We Meet, but has the advantage of working on any device. The syntax for the text only client can be found at texting commands. The following are the feature's of We Meet service. (Click on feature to see screenshot).
- Registration (Java only)
- Create Groups (Java only)
- Delete/Modify Groups (Java only)
- Join & Exit Group (Java & Text only)
- Send Chat messages to the Group (Java & Text only)
- Add/Invite Remote members (Java only)
- Vicinity or Location information of group participants (Java & text)
- Turn On/Off groups (Java & Text)
- Turn On/Off Service (Java & Text)
- Turn On/Off Location broadcasting (Java only)
The vicinity/location information in We Meet is based on GSM mobile positioning method using Cell Id information. The end user vicinity information is broadcasted to the group participant's and user can turn off this feature at any time.
The Java client works on Nokia S60 and S40 devices which support Java. Since this is still a beta service, we have done extensive testing on only some of Nokia devices. Technically the service should work with no issues on any Nokia S60 and S40 device which supports Java, but there could be some issues which are very device specific. During the beta, we would be testing the service on any as many Nokia devices as possible and would be updating the FAQ frequently.
NOTE:
Currently supported Nokia devices:
S60: N72, N95, E51, E62, E70, E71, 5800 XpressMusic, and most other S60 devices. It is an known issue that We Meet is extremely slow on N95 8GB.
